DPD Productions Antenna

Postby jpalexander » May 15th, 2009, 8:23 pm

Just got a new antenna, and it works great! I haven't tried any of the others so I can't say how it compares, but compared to the antenna that came with the unit, the DPD has just about doubled my range.

I doesn't need a ground plane, but it is big! 57 inches in height, and weighs almost two pounds. Has anyone else used this antenna?

Here is the link. Scroll down until you get to the ADS-B antenna:

Try the links off this search, those who've got them seem to be happy, and not that dear for shipping, just be aware Parcelforce will collect the import duty and charge you for the privilege......!

Sorry (a bottle of wine intervened!). the link quoted doesn't lead directly to the threads, just enter "DPD" and you should get some leads..............

DPD Antenna

Postby jpalexander » May 16th, 2009, 1:01 am

I live in the US, and I ordered the antenna directly from the company for $90 (GBP 60) plus $16.95 shipping. I just got a hit 250 miles away with no preamp. I live in the KLAX area, and I caught a Volaris flight coming from Mexico.

I don't know how good the kinetic external antenna is, but I know it costs quite a bit more and claims 3dB gain, whereas the DPD claims a 9dB gain.

Pretty good customer service too, no phone number, only email, but they respond very quickly.

Hello Keith,

We've just been dealing directly. Since many of our products appeal to a small niche, that has been working out OK so far. We do ship to the UK using USPS, which is fairly affordable. Usually about $40 give or take.

Thanks,

Dave

USPS is indeed the United States Postal Service.

A couple of things about this antenna, the elements are sealed in a 1 1/4 inch diameter radome. This makes it weather resistant and rugged, but also heavy (and tall) and more susceptible to wind, so make sure you secure it appropriately. It also comes with an "N" connector.

word of warning

Postby chrisg0wtz » May 16th, 2009, 7:43 pm

An antenna this high will yeild a good distance but at the cost of local traffic

Any more than 5db gain for ADSB and you are really going to reduce local traffic.

In the short term in areas where ADSB traffic is sparse this may be an attractive option but when it gets as busy as UK traffic you will see long range but not short range.

I am afraid with Mode S at 1090mHz the rule book has been redefined as the antenna is looking mostly at signals from above. Any other traffic at that frequency is looking at signals from the ground.

When testing an antenna I always get within a couple of miles of an airport to see how it affects local traffic.

To this day I have yet to see any antenna outperform the BS1100 out in the sticks and the BS1105 close to Airports

Hi, Chris

I am a little confused. Why would a higher gain antenna reduce local traffic?

I have personally not had this experience, I am right in the flight path of LAX traffic coming from the Northwest, and planes flying overhead come in fine. I can also follow aircraft from 140 miles away all the way to the airport without interruption. I haven't used the BS1100 or BS1105, but I have had great results with the DPD antenna, both locally and at a distance, as well as on the ground at the airport.

People have also used preamps with a 12 dB gain (and more noise) and they have not reported any reduction in local traffic.

ADS_B (sbs/radarbox) Vertical Outdoor Model Antenna

your reply will be posted to the Kinetic forum members on receipt
Many thanks for you advise

Hello Keith,

This is subject to change of course, but the antenna by itself is $89.95. Shipping and handling to the UK is $39.95. For a total of $129.90.

For the antenna that includes either the SMA or BNC 4 foot patch cable, the total is $145.85.

A lot of guys have been using the WestFlex 103 cable over there I believe. So if you order the antenna with the patch cable, you need your main cable to have male N connectors on each end.

Out of the US orders need to be done directly, so I can send you a PP invoice for the total if you're interested. Payment can be made with a regular card as a non member if you aren't a PayPal member.

FYI... Because the model has been quite popular, we've been a little behind. Right now it's a max wait of about 1 1/2 week to ship. We're trying to go as fast as we can though.

How fast it gets there depends on a little luck. If they miss you at home, they apparently sometimes don't try again and just send a letter that they're holding it. Which of course takes a few days more.

Thanks,

Dave

here's the second

And FYI... Nobody has mentioned to me anything about missing close in contacts with our antenna. That seems to be an assumption some people make, I'm not sure why.

regarding this issue

a similar claim was made against the SSEJIM antenna which i have here
and i havent lost any close by contacts all stansted arrivals down to 300 feet appear perfectly inc directly over the roof .

from the comments regarding people over here using Westflex
plus the comments re delivery being tried just the once i am guessing someone has one of these antennas in uk or europe
wonder if thats true and if they read this they could kindly comment

cheers
