This Islander seems to be constantly on the aircraft list, for a week or so, at 9-10000ft with a callsign of ZZZZ000! Could this be a spurious transmission of have they invented inflight refuleing for Islanders!

Hi Rob.

Yes m8.This was well covered as far back as 7 Feb 07 Page 4.

I was told it was on surveilance(Computers or something) :?

The squawk conveys LTCC SPECIAL TASKS(5001). Refuelling?? Makes you think,it stays up there for yonks at a time.Been around for weeks as well,at different times.

Thanks Roger. he can't have inflight refueling as he's just poped up again after an hour with no contact. Must be as 'hush-hush' and the two Cessna twins at Farnborough which go out for a couple of hours but never land away, but I didn't say anything!
Just wish French Army Gazells had mode S as 6 routed out of Netheravon today over London and only the lead ship AAC one squarked! Dam French and their poor avionics fit  !

Like everybody else I constantly have these aircraft showing & never going beyond 10,000ft, looking at the last altitude showing in reporter I have a feeling they come out of Northolt, I do occasionally see or hear the Islander but not on a daily basis.

The Islanders aren't pressurised so they are limited to FL100. I spent most of my flying days at this level - it got a bit boring.

It used to get interesting flying at FL150 on demo tours in an unpressurised Shorts 360 because the chief pilot wanted to save on fuel - just making a cup of coffee in the galley turned into a challenge... :D

I am always picking one of these on the SBS.
Actually had one fly over a week ago at about 3,000. Looked like a porcupine with all those aerials and bulges.
Do we start worrying now.....

Lets not ask too many questions about these boys and what they get up too. Lets just pretend they're not there and ignore them.

I don't want SBS or any other Mode S unit available to be banned
