Hi Guys

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought that antenae tuned to VHF and UHF were not much use for the SBS, it is quite obvious that this one is making a differrence.

Cheers.

Interesting review

found one piece o finterest you mention you had the VHF/UHF expansion board
how did you get on

reason i ask is i found mine to be deaf -- until in all innocence changed the mode to AMS
dont ask me why i have no idea but that brought the AM airband to life

there is a yahoo group for the 545
a guy asked why he could not get any acars decodes with it
someone who i know meant well produced all types of graphs and spectrum analasis as to why not

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NRD-545/message/1889

plus here the note to himself was from me

http://www.blackcatsystems.com/NRD545/acars.html

little old me with no knowledge of the situation replied change the mode to AMS
guess what the same story acars decodes aplenty ,, so much for graphs and analasys

i found that the mode button was a very effective attenuator for AM transmissions

i was lead to believe that AMS refers to AM Stereo, apparently there was efforts to transmit stereo radio on AM
in the states, but i would have thought that would have died long before the 545 was built
so no idea why but a true story

cheers

Hi Keith, you may find this site interesting, it explains the 'AMS' function? I came across a lot of these problems with my 545 that the author (Dave N9EWO) did! Oh btw my CHE-199 was deaf also, I sold my converter to a guy in Australia (I did tell him about its poor performance!...honest  )

http://n9ewo.angelfire.com/nrd545.html

I don't intend to put you off this JRC RX but for the price it cost you would have expected better from a company like this! I run my 2x R71's through 2x Global 2000 antenna tuners connected to a an RF sytems SP-1 HF splitter which is connected to 1x 60ft...ish long wire (copper flex-weave)

On AM broadcast and especially utility SSB signals these two give professional performance! My opinion of course!
